Final document coming out of the Extraordinary Synod on the Family held in October 2014
Working document for the current XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. The document’s goal is to “raise questions and indicate points of view that will later be developed and clarified through reflection in the local Churches” during the time between the two synods.
What has the timeline looked like?
The Preparatory Document was distributed to Bishops and their dioceses throughout the world in order to provide an essential catechesis on the Gospel of the Family and to gather input from the lay faithful with regard to nine overarching questions pertaining to the pastoral challenges facing the modern family.
The Diocese of Richmond began a process whereby all pastors and parishes were invited to contribute responses to the questions put forward in the Preparatory Document.
The Diocese of Richmond compiled the responses from the 32 parishes who participated. Bishop DiLorenzo submitted these responses to the Holy See along with many other dioceses to aid in drafting the document that would eventually serve as the basis for discussion at the Extraordinary Synod.
The Instrumentum Laboris was released as the core document that served as the basis for discussion. This document provides a reflection on the major challenges facing the family today and is based on the responses received from each diocese throughout the world.
The Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops convened between October 5-19, 2014 to discuss “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization”. The final report called the “Relatio Synodi” was released at the close of the Synod for all to read. This document will serve as the basis for discussion at the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of the Bishops that will convene in October 2015.
