What happens on a weekend?

An atmosphere is created for the two of you to concentrate exclusively on each other, free of the distractions, pressures and interruptions of daily living – a “time out” away from home, friends, and wedding preparations. There are no group dynamics or group therapy. It is a quiet weekend, specifically designed to give you the opportunity to talk honestly and intensively about your future together – an opportunity to discover a deeper appreciation of your relationship and God’s call to unite in a permanent union, the Sacrament of Matrimony.

The weekend consists of a series of carefully prepared talks led by a team of married couples and a priest or deacon.  Couples in attendance are encouraged to talk privately with each other on many aspects of marriage, always from the viewpoint of their own relationship.

Among the subjects you will have an opportunity to discuss with each other are your ambitions, goals, attitudes about God, sex, money, children, family, and your role in the church and community. Personal reflection and couple discussion are the main focus of our weekend. Since each relationship is in a different place, your private answers will be unique and special to your relationship.

Through personal sharing, the members of the presenting team talk about what the sacrament of matrimony means to them individually and the impact a great marriage can have on the world. We will not tell you how to live your life. Our stories are meant to encourage you to explore your own attitudes and expectations. We will offer some good ideas and tools to help the two of you to continue growing closer through the years.

The following video provides additional information that might be helpful as you consider attending an Engaged Encounter weekend.

What is the cost for a weekend?

Engaged Encounter currently offers two options:

  • Full weekend retreat = $360 (Friday night – Sunday morning)
  • Two-day commuter retreat = $225 (Saturday and Sunday)

Couples who are experiencing financial hardship should contact the registration team for information regarding assistance.

What is included in the registration cost?

On the full weekend retreat lodging is included for Friday and Saturday nights. Meals are included on Saturday (full breakfast, lunch, dinner) and Sunday (full breakfast, lunch). All materials are included for the weekend when you arrive and check in. Separate overnight accommodations are provided for men and women. Please be aware that you may have a roommate, and smoking accommodations cannot be guaranteed. We are not able to accommodate couples who wish to stay offsite during the weekend retreat. Due to the nature of the retreat and the need for private dialogue between couples, it is essential that couples stay overnight in the lodging provided.

On the two-day non-residential retreat, meals are included for both Saturday (continental breakfast, lunch, dinner) and Sunday (continental breakfast, lunch).

When and how should we register?

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited for each weekend, so we suggest booking a weekend three months in advance. It is also strongly recommended that couples attend a weekend between two to twelve months before their wedding day.
